Hudson Valley Volkswagen
Volkwagen Repair by Dealer — deals car first blow

Cars & Transport

I brought my 1994 Volkswagen Jetta into Hudson Valley Volkswagen in Wappingers Falls, New York for a 21 point inspection before my son returning from college was to use it for travel for a summer internship.

I was told that the rear brakes needed replacement (I knew this) and that the tie-rod and head gasket had to be replaced. Cost a little over $1,700. Dealers are expensive, but I always took my car to a dealer because I felt there was more creditability and recourse if a problem did occur. My car was always serviced by a dealer. This dealer had recently opened and was quite a bit closer. It was a pretty standard repair.

When my husband went to pick up the car and drove it a total of 10 miles the car would not shift into the next gear (it was an automatic). The first thing out of his mouth was we must have done something — driven it hard or something. I told him to check the odometer. Then he backed off. My husband drove the car back up and wait. They drove him home — a week later thy still could not find the problem — first it was the silinode, then the computer, then the harness. Finally they said it had to be something deep inside the transmission cost $1,800 to get a used transmission and install it. I said I had to think about it.

I called up Volkswagen of America, Customer Relations for help. To at least send a field engineer to help in the diagnosis. Forget getting any help from them. It was up to the dealer. So much for going to dealers with the notion that the company who puts them name on the franchise will assist the customer.

Having lost confidence in this dealership, desparately needing to get the car fixed for my son, I called Aamco Transmissions in
Poughkeepsie, New York. That was the final blow to the car.
