Firestone padding estimates to make money - Auto Service

Cars & Transport

I have a '98 Jeep Cherokee on the resale lot on Maxwell AFB, AL. A potential buyer was very interested in my Jeep and offered me $4000 for it... Contingent upon a satisfactory inspection. He took it to the Firestone on base and an hour later came back with an estimate of ~ $2500. Naturally he backed out of the deal. The very next day I took it to another garage (not a backyard mechanic) and explained to them I was trying to sell my Jeep and wanted to make sure it was in good condition. Approximately two hours later they are finished and hand me an estimate of $75.00!!! Imagine my surprise. It did not need a new battery, a new alternator, shocks, brake pads, rotors, or a valve cover gasket. The only thing was the oil filter housing that needed to be replaced. When I told him of my experience with Firestone he laughed. I even questioned him about the items that Firestone had listed as needing to be fixed on my Jeep. My shocks were not leaking, my battery was not bad and surprise... My alternator was fine. Thanks Firestone... You just cost me $4000. I know where I am not ever, did I mention EVER going to patronize again. Also, I will be sure to relate my experience to all those I know on base and the surrounding area do they can make their own decisions as where to go for their "compete auto care" needs.
