American Honda Motor Co
Faulty Transmission - 2001 Odyssey

Cars & Transport

I bought a 2001 Honda Odyssey in June. It is the third Honda vehicle that I have purchased (previous two were Accords and I now also own an Acura). I have always been impressed with Honda's reliability. However, I discovered recently that my 2001 Odyssey which has only 59,230 miles on it needs to have its transmission replaced. What I didn't know until some further research is that the 2003 transmissions had a high unreliability rate. This was discovered during research on Consumer Reports and confirmed by an American Honda Corporation official who informed me that because of this problem, unbeknownst to me, my warranty on the transmission had been extended up to 7 years and 9 months. Of course, I didn't know that my warranty had been extended because I was not informed that I had a Honda Odyssey with a faulty transmission. Even though I have averaged less than 5 thousand miles annually driving the Odyssey, I was terribly disappointed in the fact that Honda would not provide any concession on the over $5,000 that I now must spend to buy and install a rebuilt transmission.

So please be sure to check the reliability of your Car manufacturer before you buy.

I will certainly make sure that is at the top of my list as I look to purchase my next vehicle (and maybe it will not be in the Honda family)
