Round Rock Texs & Many Other Fast-food Drive-thru's In The Austin, Texas Area. Drive-thru employees trying to steal change from customers on regular basis! Ripoff And Austin

Cafes, Bars, Restaurants

I have noticed a disturbing trend in fast-food drive-thrus and now that it has happened to me several times with such amazing similarities I have concluded that this has become a common scam among fast-food drive-thru window employees at many fast-food restaurants. Here is what has been happening:

I have driven through Wendy's, Burger King and McDonald's drive-thru's during both slow and busy times of the day and usually order two or three items from the 99-cent menu. I have paid with either a ten-dollar bill or a five-dollar bill. EVERY SINGLE TIME this scam has been pulled on me it has been exactly ONE DOLLAR that has not been returned to me in my change. For example, today I was at Burger King and got a Jr. Whopper and a Value Fries, each was 99 cents. The total, with tax, was $2.14. I gave the young man a FIVE DOLLAR BILL and he asked if I wanted ketchup with that, to which I said I did. Then he handed me my change and my receipt, not specifying how much it was, but saying, "Here's your change." (They are supposed to actually tell you how much your change is AND COUNT IT BACK TO YOU). The change he handed me was $1.86. On the receipt it showed that he had rung TEN DOLLARS as the amount I had given him and the change due being $7.86. Now, if he was stupid or not paying attention, one would assume that he would give back $7.86 in change, right? Sure. But he did not. He shorted me exactly ONE DOLLAR and he tried to cover his tracks even further by entering in a different amount on the receipt to aid him in duping me. Needless to say, this made me somewhat incensed and I went inside the restaurant to get my other dollar.

This is a common scam, evidently, and it's an easy one. All the jerk has to do is pretend he made a mistake. Gee, it's only a dollar, who cares, right? If that punk does that to ten people an hour, he's stealing $80 a day (assuming he works 8 hours) from unknowing customers who trust these restaurants to be honest and have standards. Also, the restaurants don't have any way of tracking this activity, since the jerks are stealing from the return change, not from the till. All they need to do is keep track of what they steal and take it from the drawer when no one is looking. I'm sure some of them go home with pockets full of dollar bills.

Today I decided not to swallow this with my burger again so when I got back to work I called the Burger King where it happened. The manager was a woman who was there when this happened and I told her about what happened. "Uh huh." she said and finally she appeared to understand what I was talking about. I said, "Did you know your employees were stealing from your customers like this?" She said, "Uhhhhhhh..." And I said, "YOU DID!!! YOU KNEW IT!!!" And she reluctantly said, "Yes. I knew about it." Well that was the end all! I told her how disgusted I was with it all and that I'd never go there again and I was going to contact the corporate headquarters and file a complaint, among other things. I did end up contacting the regional manager (of that and four other Burger King stores). He claims he will speak with the manager and the young man who tried to rip me off.

I would not accuse anyone of attempting to steal from me unless I were 100% sure they were doing just that. This particular scam has been attempted on me so many times now and with such amazing similarity (always one dollar short and the "amount tendered" is never right) that I can no longer deny that it is just that. I think it is important for all who use fast-food drive-thrus, or make any kind of quick transactions, to be well-aware of how much change they are getting in return. Let's put a stop to these scheisters!
