Tried to collect on 12 year old debt sent cease $ desist now they've placed a lein on our house

Please, could someone advise us. About 6 months ago we were contacted by CAMCO concerning a 12 year old debt. Sent cease and desist letter, didn't hear a thing about it after. Now we're refinancing our house and the title company has found a 2500 lein on our property, referencing the original company that CAMCO was acting on behalf of. Can CAMCO do such a thing?
My mortgage broker told me that the title company was researching this and would have more info for me tomorrow. If it is CAMCO what shoud I do? Pay it and procede with the refi? I don't think I have time to try to get this resolved, we're locked into a sweet rate. God, I'm so frustrated and upset I could scream. Any advice is welcome. Scott, from Akron any suggestions???
