ATM didn't work got sent to collections for it Ripoff

I opened a Wachovia account and the went overseas. I put money in the Wachovia account and had no problem withdrawing it with my Visa check card for purchases. The last day I was overseas I tried to withdraw money from an ATM from a major department store. The ATM gave me an error message and said my transaction could not be processed.

Well, I get home to see a debit on my account for the amount at the location I tried with withdraw money. I contacted Wachovia and they later credited me for it. However... They refused to credit the overdraft fee that was created by the debit (this may have been why I was never given the money at the ATM). Later I was charged a $4.00 fee for god knows what (it is supposed to be "free checking"), further creating an additional overdraft charge. I tried to check online the same day that I received this additional overdraft to see what this $4.00 fee was for... Turns out my account had already been sent to collections.

Then I was charged another fee again for closing my account or something. I sent at least 3 certified letters, each with a copy of the previous letter only to receive no response. I sent it to the address that the customer service department gave to me (since apparently they don't know how to help people over the phone). Funny, because I sent these letters to the same address as the letter that I sent that actually got credited (for the actuall atm charge.) So they did receive them and just don't care about thier customers.

Probably because I am not worth a lot since I never put a lot of money into thier account. It's sad too because I was considering making it my main checking account and transferring my direct deposit to them. I think for now I am going to stick with my other bank for sure. Never did find out what that $4.00 fee was for.
