Attempted Ripoff—truly a giggle

I received a phone call from these people in reference to a supposed debt with Fingerhut (That's another long story).

The original debt was for $200 and somewhat valid, (yes, I owed, but had been waiting for construction instructions to be sent for a furniture purchase) but had been cleared up with numerous phone calls between myself, Fingerhut and their credit department.

Well, imagine my surprise when RJM started calling me about this $200 "debt".

This contact was 5 years after the original purchase, 4 years after the debt was PAID, and 1.5 years after I bought a house.

Anyway, I dig through my old check stubs and bank statements (thank heavens I save them for 7-10 years) to find the correct stub. Which I found. So, I call back RJM to discuss this, and THEY state that, oh yes, they have a record of this payment, but only $146 was paid.

Now let's look at this: assuming the credit department mis-reported this (accidentally, of course{lol}) it would mean that RJM is trying to collect $200 for a debt that would be $54 AT BEST!
Are you all still with me? I'm ROFLMAO!

It became VERY quiet on the other end of the line when I pointed this out.

Before this call (me to them) they were insisting that the "debt" was valid (during my search they called again, and when I told them I was still researching it, I got a really cute comment stating: "We have a recording of "our" first conversation, and that I admitted to owing the money". Oddly enough, I remember the first conversation almost verbatim, and I had told them that, yes I made the original purchase, but this has been FULLY paid, "I will research this.") and that I would have to fax them copies of the check/statement.
During this (last) phone call I told them that there was no way on this good green earth that I would send them ANY form of bank/routing information and that if they pursued this any further they would be hearing from my lawyer. Funny enough, I haven't heard a peep out of them since.

Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that they represented themselves as a law firm in the phone calls. I wish I had that much moxie.
