Trying to collect on a 14 year old debt that they cant even substantiate

This all started several months ago when I got a phone call from Camco, letting me know that my husband had a delinquent account with "Commercial Credit". I told this guy that since we have been married he has never jad an account with Commercial Credit and we had been married since 1993. He said oh, well, this account dates back to 1989! I then told him that I would get my husband to call him back. Later that night when my husband got off of work, I asked him had he ever had an account with Commercial Credit, and he said no. I told him about the guy that called and told him that the debt dated back to 1989, he told me that he had never had any dealings with Commercial Credit.

The guy called back and finally talked to my husband, my husband told him that he had never had anything to do with Commercial Credit. The guy was able to read off his social, previous addresses, and birthdate, but unable to provide any proof of the validity of the debt. We just received a letter dated 11-25-03, stating that we owe $1,822.68. We have questioned them on the validity of this, yet we can not seem to get proof and we keep getting phone calls and letters. They called one night last week and talked to my husband wanting payment, and he again told them that he has NEVER had an account with Commercial Credit, and the man told him that by law he had to contact him one more time to try and resolve before they took further action. Why can't they give us proof of the debt like maybe a signed contract from the original supposed creditor?
