Like the other people who have filed complaints about this company, my account was also debited 69.95 without my authorization, a couple days after I was online trying to get a payday loan. I also got the runaround when I called the number associated with the withdrawal - the woman who answered the phone claimed that she worked for a customer service company that handles Consumer Advance Credits phone calls. I got the sense (long story) that all she does all day is deal with complaints about the 69.95 charge. The only option I had, she said, was to wait until I received this "package" of coupons in the mail and then return it for a refund. I'm going to do that, but I'm also taking the following steps and I recommend anyone caught up in this theft/fraud do the same -
- filing out out a report at http://www.ic3. Gov/default. Aspx (DOJ & FBI site)
- calling your bank and telling them it was a fraudulent withdrawal. Apparently, some banks, like Chase and Bank of America will simply refund the charge. Others, like Citibank, which I have, told me to go into a branch and file a fraud report.
- I haven't done this yet, but I'm looking into contacting the Better Business Bureau of Nevada (where at least the customer service rep is located).
Basically, be aggressive. When you're on the phone with them, make sure you take the step of telling them that you want them to cancel any further planned debits from your account. Until I did that, my 'subscription' was apparently still open and, in their view, my account still fair game. Press to speak to a supervisor or get contact info for Consumer Advance itself. Maybe you'll do better than I did.
One last tip — if you happen to be reading this BEFORE applying for an online payday loan, do NOT, under any circumstances, call and leave a "voice signature" at a web site's request. That's what the rep tried to tell me was my authorization (it wasn't - it was presented as part of a payday loan application). Just do not do it. I've taken out payday loans before from companies that (so far) seem legitimate and I've never had to do the voice signature thing. And yeah, it was stupid of me to resort to online payday loans. But I was desperate. Consumer Advance Credit apparently counts on this.
