$1575 a month for 7 months was paid to settle credit card debt. All settlement were done by us alone. Debt Free associates is keeping $7000 for doing nothing! Internet

My husband and I signed up with Debt Free Associates in Janusry 2009. We are in our mid sixties and have never been in this kind of situation before. My mother had passed away recently and owed IRS taxes, my husband had lost his job and our son was in his 2nd year of college. We also have an 8 year old adopted daughter.

We had a large credit card debt because of my mother's taxes and because of mortgage payments paid for rental properties when the tenants defaulted.

Debt Free Associates required a $199 initial sign up fee and $75 a month for legal fees. Also we agreed to pay them $1500 a month to build up the money for their fees (10% of the debt owed) and for making settlements with the various banks.

We were told to stop paying our credit cards. After several months, we began to get offers from the banks to settle our accounts. We were able to settle all the accounts and even a court case ourselves. No negociations were done by Debt Free Associates. We informed them of the settlements as they were being made. Our contracts says we are allowed to make settlements ourselves and they will be removed from the contract and the fees will be adjusted accordingly.

We paid them $1500 plus $75 a month for 7 months.in total we have given them $11025.00 They are refusing to return $7000 of that money, saying that even though they didn't do any negociations, they cannot return the money that was automatically deducted from our checking account.

What recourse do we have in this situation? No work was done and yet they got paid.
