Unreal rip off fees

I opened a checking account at charter one bank in webster new york less then a month ago. I deposited money in the account and began to use my mastercard debit card. I was told this card is not a charge card, it only gives you money that is in your checking account period... Well i got a statement saying i owed 700.00 in late fees??? I had only deposited 200.00 to begin with, so i was totally confused.

Come to find out they are saying that at one point i made a check card purchase for gas, i also made a deposit that same day in cash in the morning, and charter one is saying i didn't have enough funds in my account? Well then why was i able to make the purchase?

Ok so i was willing to pay the 30.00 fee. But as a result of the fee every single transaction i made after that i was charged a 30.00 fee. I deposited enough money in the bank. But still i was charged, and on top of everything the biggest problem was i was being charged 30.00 every 4 days untill the balance they say i owed was paid.

I called them and i wrote to them over and over again. And asked that the fees stop. Of course they did not. I asked them to close my account and thats when i got the shock of my life. They told me that they will not close the account, untill the balance is paid, so that meant every 4 days the 30.00 fees kept building and building. I told them we live in america, you mean to tell me i do not have the right to close an account of mine if i want to.

The bottom line is i now at the present owe charter one 700.00 and the fee are still building, i will never be able to catch up and pay my current bills. Thanks to charter one bank
