Washington Mutual
Excessive Overdraft Fees another way they are trying to make up for their managmenet's errors

Business & Finance

I have breast cancer and I'm undergoing chemo, so unfortunately I've forgotten a few things. I forgot to record one check and my APS bill for two months was the same amount so I accidentally recorded only one of the payments. WaMu kept accepting my debit card and charged me $34 each time. This started on Oct 23rd as of Oct 28th they still have not notified me of any overdraft. I found out about it because me husband stopped at the gas station and they finally refused to accept the debit card. I immediately went to the branch to find out why and found out that I was overdrawn. But in the meantime they charged my account over $600 in overdraft fees. We bought a McDonalds hamburger for $38.41, isn't that amazing. The branch told me to call the service center which I did. I was told that they could remove $204 of the charges but the rest would remain, because they did me a courtesy in accepting the debit charges. Now today I find out that WaMu just assigned an overdraft amount to my account that they would accept before they cut off the charges. So now I have to pay because they decided to accept debit charges instead of notifying me. I believe that I should pay a fee for overdrafting but not $442 for an honest mistake. And don't they legally have a certain time limit that they should notify a customer that they are overdrawn? As the manager, Nicole said at the Thunderbird branch, I should be happy that they gave me back $204 of the bank's income. Well it wasn't their income until they started charging excessively and without my consent putting a credit amount on my debit card that they would accept. I never asked for them to do this so what gives them the right. I guess we consumers have to pay for their management's errors as they try to get more income from the working class. When I wrote to customer service all I got was a canned response. Like I stated previously I believe that I should pay a fee for making the mistake but $442 is nothing but robbery, especially when I never asked them to accept more than what I had in my account, and they still haven't even notified me.
