Washington Mutual
Cashed our check for locking in a mortgage rate... Couldn't get the loan closed

Business & Finance

Just before WAMU was purchased, we were working with one of their loan officers about refinancing our home (WAMU holds the first mortgage). WAMU PUSHED US hard to refinance. We sent the $350,00 required to lock in the loan rate. Afterwards, we were worred that they wouldn't close and expressed our concerns. They insisted first they have new management, and secondly they have just been purchased by other financial institutation, and they could close. We provided all the required information. Their processor, Tami, in Florida insisted everything was going well. We couldn't proceed without sending another $200.00 check to the title company in care of, Robert Stein, at SetCorp so a minor second trust could be subordinated to the new first. Robert Stein assured me that I would receive a return check in the amount of $200 if WAMU did not proceed.

WAMU could not proceed with the closing, and we paid $350 to WAMU to lock in the rate, and another $200 to the title company who now refuses to honor their original promise that our $200.00 would definitely be refunded if WAMU didn't close.

Tami sent me an e-mail after a previous e-mail that day confirming everything was going well. Her second e-mail of the day says "Your lock does expire 10/20. (writer's note: Today is October 16) Please advise if you would like to extend the lock, at a cost of. 125 ($625).
