Phishing for info on supposed debt

8/24/08 Sunday
Received a call from Portfolio Recovery Associates. It was a brief very fast spoken recording asking me to call them. I called the number from my caller-ID (1-877-803-0008) because the message I received was so fast I was unable to write anything down. I got a voice recording saying that they were closed.

8/25/08 Monday
I called this morning. I was put on hold. Then the phone rang and I was put on hold again. The same thing happened two more times. After about 4 minutes of being on hold a person answered. The connection was very poor. I explained I received a vague message the night before and I had no idea what it was about. The woman claimed that it was about a debt I owed. I told her I wasn't aware of any debt. She asked me for the phone number that I received the message on. I told her my phone number. She asked me for my name and I told her. She asked for my last 4 digits of my social security number. I told her I wasn't comfortable giving out this info. I asked her how was I to know that this wasn't some kind of phishing scam. She said I had to give her my last 4 digits or she couldn't help me. I told her that since I had not received any late notices and that no one else has tried to contact me about an overdue bill that I felt uncomfortable handing out my private information without some further knowledge. I told her that she could tell me what the debt is regarding and then I would give her my info. She said she could not do that. She said the law will not allow her to give out that info unless she confirmed who she was talking to. I told her then she could have the company that the debt is owed to call me to verify that a debt is actually owed. She said that PRA was the company. I said that's funny I have never done business with your company. She then said good bye and hung up.

I have checked all my records and found that I have no over due bills. I checked my credit report and found nothing negative. I felt that this company was trying to pin something on me without cause. They seem to be scam artist.
