My wife initially recieved a summons to appear in court for hearing on a 10k credit card debt neither of us had heard about.

We took out an Equty loan 2 years ago and wiped her credit report clean. There was no citibank aka assets acceptance on the report.
We went to court and they had no documents supporting their claim. The court gave them 90 days to come up with proof of the money we owed.

We now just recieved a letter request horrendous amounts of info that we will use to go to court to fight this. Aproximatlely 60 questions and required answers or reasons for lack of answers.

They say they are assignees of citibank but in court on a phone conference call I asked the attorney if they had bought the alleged debt and he said yes. When asked by the judge why they had no paperwork he said that citibank was a big company and there was a backlog of people requesting the same info.

We don't know what to do. The letter came regular mail but was on stationary that resembled legal court ducuments. A letter showing that they delivered the letter to the courts requesting the info was also included.

They are asking for check stubs from 2001. Other info that we don't even know what it is. It says in the letter the info must be delivered to their office by 7/31 at 11:00 AM for inspection and photocopying.

Could someone please tell us what to do or if it has happened to someone else. We don't have the means to pay for a lawyer or pay off a 10k debt we were never aware of.

In the letter it implies non-compliance with the requested information as admission of guilt and therefor we automatically will owe the money. Nothing directly says that, but worded in a way that makes you feel that is what will happen.
