I have received a settlement offer from Afni, Inc. (a credit collector) for $49.63. They claim that I owe Verizon $99.26 from phone service that dates back 11 years. I filed a complaint with the BBB and they responded with a fake billing statement from 1997. First of all, this bill, dated 12/10/97, is from Verizon, however, GTE was my phone company at that time. GTE wasn't acquired by Verizon until the year 2000. Second, I remember closing out my phone account and paying off my balance when I moved my place of residence in 1997. Third, this is the second credit company that has come after me with a fake telephone delinquency bill. Of course, I didn't keep my billing statements from 11 years ago. I believe these credit companies target closed phone accounts up to a decade after they've been closed, asking for small amounts of money from a large amount of people. One company even went after my Grandma for an account she never had and she told me she just paid it off. I make a good enough living to do so myself, however, I feel violated and I'm disgusted that some random company could legally gain access to my personal information and threaten to ruin my credit history if I don't pay them.
