Asset Acceptance LLC
Asset Acceptance LLC sent me bill for debt I did not owe

Business & Finance

This past weekend, I received a letter from Asset Acceptance LLC, claiming I owed nearly $16,500 for a Bank of America credit card that had been charged off, and Asset Acceptance had bought the debt. I knew this couldn't be my debt; I did not have a Bank of America account. I immediately pulled my three credit reports - none had any mention of this debt. My husband and I just bought a home recently and the mortgage process did not uncover any outstanding debts or collections. So, this letter was mind boggling to me — and scary. Making things worse, I did Internet searches for Asset Acceptance and that's how I found my way to Usa Consumer Complaints.com and all the negative comments from other people who have had to deal with this company.

Now, here's the good news. Based on others' recommendations, instead of calling the collection company, I immediately turned to the PA Attorney General's Office, Bureau of Consumer Protections. They were wonderful. One of the agents took my information, called Asset Acceptance, and within three hours, she called me back to say that Asset Acceptance had done research and realized it was not my debt. I'm not sure yet who is responsible for the original error — Bank of America or Asset Acceptance — but Asset Acceptance allegedly has removed my name and personal information from this account and says I will not be contacted by them again.

I'm filing this report so that others in my situation know that they can contact their state's attorney general's office for help. I cannot say enough nice things about the PA attorney general's office and their quick response to my situation.
