Astoria Federal Savings
Charged for closing my account

Business & Finance

I had a passbook savings account with this bank for more then 10y. A few years back I converted it to a CD, which I kept on renewing. Latest expiration was last week on 2-24. I chosed to close accound and withdraw money. I called the bank on 2-26, but they said they are unable to close account over the phone. So I had to go into branch on Saturday.

Here they said that I lost my passbook (which I did) and now have to pay $10 for a certification of my "lost" passbook which they put on file supposedly to protect against me finding the book in a few years and coming in again to claim the money.

This is of course on a CD that only earned $5.15 at last maturity.

I called the bank's customer service and they reiterated that this is their policy.

When I expressed my unhappiness the rep said "good bye" and hang up on me...
Nice? No?

I called and spoke to supervisor "Nitin Manjrekar" who very politely explained that there is nothing he can do.
And I know that $10 isn't worth to sue over, but it's worth complaining about, maybe someone will not do business with these guys because of it
