Midland Credit Garnishment

Several years ago I was harassed by Cohen and Slamowitz about a debt that was, by then, several years old. When I repeatedly asked for documentation they agreed but never sent (they were very rude and condescending). Fast foward 1 1/2 years. I have since moved from where I was at the time the harassment started.in August I received a letter from my employer stating that my wages were being garnished and incuded the contact number for the City Marshal. I did not at that time contact the office listed (for a variety of reasons - deaths in the family, etc.) and at that point approximately $600 per month was being garnished from my paycheck.in December (two months ago) I received another letter forwarded by my employer from the NYC Marshal and a "refund check" of approximately $300. The letter also stated that the "execution heretofore served upon you in the above matter is released". I called the NYC Marshal to find out exactly what this all means and they said there was no info on the docket number that was on the letter and told me to call Cohen and Slamowitz (by the way, the letter listed Midland Funding as the original creditor and my credit report lists a "Midland Management" as an adverse account with a balance of approx. $6,000. I am very leery about contacting Cohen as I don't want to open a can of worms. At the same time I am imagining that if the letter sent to me by the marshal says the "matter is released" does that mean I can have this removed from my credit report? I find it odd that the Marshal cannot provide this info if a judgment was filed. I forgot to mention that I had disputed this item with all reporting agencies a year ago and all but Transunion removed it from my report.
