BBT Bank
So-called "maintenance fee" assessed against a senior citizen

Business & Finance

I recently transferred my everyday banking out of BBT, intending to reserve that account for my business expenses only. This would include direct deposit of commissions, and online payment of state sales taxes/

In line with that plan, I changed my SocSec deposit to the other bank. On January 30, when I checked my balance I discovered that I had been charged a maintenance fee. When I e-mailed "why?" I got back a canned reponse which was non-responsive. It included a list of minimum balances to qualify for a free account. (Their minimum balance requirement apparently doesn't take into account my almost 7K CD!) I also asked when I had become vulnerable to this fee, and asked why I had not been informed of this fee.

I have since asked the same questions and gotten the same non-responses.

I have also discovered that they haven't a clue about technology: I went to print out the current e-mail exchange, and discovered that's not possible. I sent a technical query on that one, and have yet to receive a response.

I've also sent a query about federal and state oversight agencies, and about the corporate officer responsible (RIGHT!) for customer service. Still waiting there, too.

It's not the money. It's the principal of the thing. WRONG.

It's not only the principal of the thing, it's the money— that crappy eight bucks every month is one hundred dollars a year, and for what? To get screwed every month!

And these weasels have the nerve to say how happy they are to have my business. And to offer their help via e-mail. Aaaargh.
