This firm is Phishing beware of their calls

This firm, a debt collection agency, has copied another firm that was calling randomly each day with a recorded message that proclaims: this is not a sales call. Please call back at (same number) and they leave a reference number. The phone company was called to complain and the operator called the number for me to find out who was calling and spoke to a man. He would not tell her his name or the company name. He said "if you have this number, then you know what company this is." The apparent intent of this cold calling is this: call them back and they ask for a SSN. As they al;ready ahve name and address off the call database. They then can peruse credit reports to see if the called party is in arrears. They then can solicit their collection business with a credit card company etc. Thus, it's a phishing exercise (data mining operations) to discover where uncollected debts might be; contact those firms and get assignments to collect debts.

It is telemarketing on a different level. Best though of as like a "Phishing spam" in your mail box with a pseudo address that appears authentic.

Never underestimate the power of sleaze. It's the American way... To make a buck any way you can.
