UNKNOWN Charge Off

I did not know for many years that my credit report had a tarnish. I never had any issue, Ever!
Then, I found out that GMAC had placed a "Charge Off" on one of my dealings with them. I have never left an account unpaid and thought that this was a mistake. What I have come to surmise is that they tarnished my credit report. I believe this is due to a dismissal on their part. They never contacted me that I owed any monies after leaving a Smart Lease early. The only thing that I can surmise is that I might have owed the money, they did not notify me, and just wrote it off.
Easy for them, but completely wronged me as a repeat customer.
