Harassing and abusive phone calls to 90 yr. OLD GMA Would Not Give Me Address Nationwide

Business & Finance

I took out a Sallie Mae loan for college 15 years ago, before I was married. At the time, I had to put down a reference for the loan and used my grandmother. The loan was in deferrment until recently.

On Thursday, November 15, my 90-year-old grandmother calls me all upset because someone ("a woman") called her wanting to know if she knew me, where I lived, my phone number, and she stated my SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER and asked my grandma if it was me. My grandmother told her that it might be me but she didn't know my house number of SS#. My grandmother kept asking the woman what this was about but she would not tell her.

That evening, my grandmother called me and told me about the phone call. I had no idea what it was about and feared that someone was trying to steal my identity, which thank God that the lady was talking to my grandmother giving her my SOCIAL SECURITY number and all!!!

I have an answering machine that picks up my phone calls when I am not home and did not have any phone calls about anyone looking for me. So, I was very concerned and confused, as was my grandmother.

Then, on Saturday morning, November 17, my grandmother received another phone call. She said that first a woman called asking the same questions, repeating my SOCIAL SECURITY number. My grandmother was very upset and asked what this is all about. At that time, a male yelled at her stating, "Why are you getting upset, does she have so many loans that she can not pay her bills." My grandmother said "No, I just don't know what this is about." My grandmother then asked for their phone number to give to me so I could call them back.

My grandmother was so upset, that she wrote down the wrong number and the wrong name. I had to try several number scenarios before I got the right number.

I called the number and spoke with a Jason Foley. He told me that my Sallie Mae loan was bought by another lender and that I needed to pay $6000 (today) and $500 a month. I told him that someone called my grandmother and asked him to please take her phone number out of the system. He asked me for her phone number and looked it up in his computer and said that the call was made from someone else, but he would take her number out of the system.

I asked him if I could call him back on Monday after work to discuss payment. He said that he would put the account on hold until I called him back and asked what time I would be calling. I told him at around 5:00, depending on what time I got home from work. He said "Okay".

On the same day, my husband got a call on his cell phone. Again, a woman asked him, "Is this %, husband of Lisa?" She then asked if his SOCIAL SECURITY number was %, which it was correct. He said yes. Then she proceeded to say that Lisa has a loan, why isn't she paying it, I'm calling to get payment, that he needed to pay the loan. My husband kept trying to ask her who she was and that he didn't know what she was talking about. She would not quit talking for him to even answer any of her questions. She said that it was a school loan and kept talking about payment. My husband had to raise his voice over hers to tell her that this was a business phone and not to call it and to call his wife on the home phone.

At that moment, a man's voice yelled, "Why are you screaming like a baby instead of talking like a man." My husband hung up his phone because he was standing in a wholesalers store working.

Approximately, 15 mins. Later, his work phone rang again. It was the same man. He asked him, "Is this % SOCIAL SECURITY number %" My husband said yes. The man then literally "went off" on my husband saying, "we will put a lein on your home, we will come after your business, if you married her you married the debt, your a baby for raising your voice..." My husband kept trying to ask the guy what his name was saying "What is your name... What is your name..." The guy (never stopping his tirade) screamed, "Pay your loan, pay your loan, pay your loan!" My husband, while the man never quit speaking, stated "Sir, this is a business phone, not my wife's phone, I am reccommending that you never call this phone again. Thank you very much and have a nice day." And he hung up.

My husband tried to call the number back several times during the day to try to get the guys name, but no one answered the phone. The phone number was 614-322-1696.

Today, November 19, my boss received a phone call from GC Services verifying my employment and getting the address to send Wage Garnishment forms. My employer calls me back to her office for an explanation.

Then, approximately 1-2 hours later, Sherri from GC Services calls me at work to verify that I was not refusing to pay my loan. I told her that I was to call Jason back at around 5:00, after I was done working. I told her to please take my work phone number out of her system because I am not allowed personal phone calls at work. She said that she would.

I called Jason back at 5:15 to discuss payment of the loan. He kept asking me for my bank account number and to pick a date for my payment of $500 to come out of my checking. I told him that I would need to see when or if I would have that kind of money in my checking. He stated that if I didn't call back by 9:00 this evening, they would proceed with garnishing my wages.

While I had him on the phone, I asked him to check his computer to see who called my grandmother and my husband on Saturday. He said that it was Ben Short. He said, "I didn't realize that they called both of them." I thanked him and hung up.
