Woodforest National Bank
Debit Card Purchases Cause Overdraft Fees ripoff

Business & Finance

Woodforest National Bank has started approving debit card purchases even when there isn't money in the account to cover it, and charging $32 fee for each transaction. You can easily rack up hundreds of dollars in fees without knowing it until the notice arrives in the mail several days later.

I always thought debit cards would be "declined" if you didn't have the money in the bank. That's the way it used to be, but not anymore.

They also don't necessarily clear transactions in the order that they come in. They will clear the largest transaction first, which could cause some lower dollar amount transactions that were actually made first to bounce. You end up paying the $32 on each of those smaller transactions.

I understand this is theorectically legal, but it is an insanely unfair practice and I urge anyone who experiences this to file a complaint with the Federal Reserve and write you congressmembers and senators asking them to change the current banking laws.
