Unethical and fraudulent collection practices on old Verizon NY phone accounts ripoff

Afni obtained information from Verizon NY regarding unsettled accounts from the early 1990s. Although the statute of limitations on these accounts has expired, Afni is seeking to collect on these old accounts, hoping you'll believe their legitimacy and send them the money they say you owe.

I never lived at or recieved mail at the account they had linked with an old phone account they claim I owe money on (which is what tipped me off in the first place)! When I called to discuss this claim the customer service representative and her supervisor were rude, indignant and unhelpful.

After doing some research, I learned that it is not against the law for Afni to send out letters asking for payment but that it is against the law for them to report non-payment to credit reporting agencies or to sue you for hound you for payment. They are working on the assumption that you don't know this and will simply write out a check and send it to them.

Before sending them any money, make sure they have the evidence to back up their claim and that the statute of limitation for your state has been met.

Although not illegal this sure is an misleading and unethical business practice if ever I saw one!
