Ripoff dishonest company changing amount and date on collection account

This company has recently acquired an old account that I had with Providian that went into collections. They have changed the amount from $581 to $1212 and the last date of activity from 9 to 3. I have had no contact with this company and have made no agreements with them. Can they change the amount and date of last activity on a closed past due account?
