Sent $4,000 Check for $1,000 Debt, Difference Never Refunded

I sent them a check for $4,000.00 because I had no bank account and I owed them over $1,000.00 For a credit card I couldn't keep up the paymets with. So they kept calling me and harassing me that I'm finnally sent the check to them. They said they would send me the difference once the check cleared but never did. When I called them they said the check was destroyed
