Not posting payoffs of loans and changing account numbers without a cross reference number ripoff

We banked with Old Kent Bank for many years. When Fifth Third bought them out they gave everyone new account numbers for all transactions to do with the bank. During this buy out, we changed banks and payed off all loans with Old Kent. However, Fifth Third did not post these payments and filed negative credit reports against us.

Our son was sued by Fifth Third even though his loan was paid off with a certified check from another bank. After about 6 to 7 years, we have recieved another letter demanding payment of several thousand dollars for an account number I have no clue about.

This also happened to a co-worker of mine. If it happened to 3 of us in this area, how many others has it happened to? We have sent proof of payments and they say the matter has been taken care of, then a year later we recieve letters from a different "attorney" demanding payment.

This is absolute fraud and it has harmed our credit reports. How does an individual fight this fraud? And why does the Dept. Of Financial Services not do something with this blatant rip-off? I recently filed a complaint with the State Attorney General who in turn forwarded it to the Consumers Services Division of the Financial Services. I am waiting reply from them.
