Unable to close an account

I recently found I had an open account with Fingerhut (via a credit report) and found out that Compucredit "purchased" the account. I have tried to contact the company in order to close the account, which has a zero balance and have been unable to do so. Given the negative press on this company, I am concerned that I could be next to be ripped-off. Please help me to close this account!
