Paid these people because they got a seizure of property order and now they have filed for a Garnishment of Income Tax Refund Ripoff

I wish I knew now what I should have done when served with papers for a judgement.in November Asset Acceptance was given a judgement by default of $1998.00 plus court costs for a debt that was not valid and would have been out of the statute of limitations in one month. I had paperwork to prove them wrong at one time, but after 6 years and never having heard anything for 5, I threw them away. When served the papers I did not know what to do and so did nothing.in January of this year they got a warrant to seize property and in March the Sheriff's Department came and took my car. I then borrowed the money and got it back with a receipt.in May I received a certified true copy of the monies being released by the court to Asset Acceptance. I thought nothing more of it. On November 15th they then filed a request for garnishment of Income Tax returns. I went to the court and filed an objection, which the court did not want to let me do, but as it was the last day on the day I received to file an objection I made them file it. They told me to call Asset Acceptance and find out why they were doing this and I spoke to a supervisor there. He said that I was lying and they had never received the money. I have all the paperwork on this. I told him that I would fax it to them and he stated that they do not have a fax machine. How am I supposed to go forward with this? I am not paying these people another dime. Should I hire an attorney to go to court with me to fight this? Court date is set for December 20th. I think these people have my money and are willingly trying to double dip. They also never filed a satifaction of judgement with the court.
