I should have listened to my inner thoughts. Recently, I received a phone call from a collection agency regarding an eight year old debt. These individuals [Resurgent Capital Services], stated who they were and their reason for contacting me.
They went on to say that I could resolve a $10,049.56 balance by transferring $5,000 of it to a Pre-Approved Visa credit card. Now mind you, I did have a balance with Citibank Visa in the year of 1998.
The limit on the card was $8,500 and soon after reached full capacity. Now being young and knieve at the time, caused me to be negligent with the monthly payments. Soon after, the card was "charged off" and sent into collections.
I ignored all attempts to pay in full and eventually disregarded the issue entirely. Eight years went by, addresses changed and I finally came to realize that I wanted to get my * in order, so when they called I saw it as an opportunity to do so.
During the first initial phone call I was very skeptical of what the individual was soliciting. She was very unprofessional in her delivery and became irrate when I informed her of my suspicions. At this time I declined the offer and suggested that they send something in writing.
About a week or so later I received my request for documentation. At this point I became a bit less uncomfortable. Feeling optimistic, I complied with agreement.[BIG MISTAKE].
Fast Forward: I received a card in the mail that had all the characteristics of a legitimate credit card, VISA logo, bank's name, etc. I immediately called the activation number and the women informed me that the first statement would arrive shortly thereafter.
Upon arrival, I opened the envelope and was immediately puzzled by the characteristics of the bill. It was as if someone photo copied it. There were no vivid colors as I've seen on other credit card statements.
My B.S. Antennae were activated instantly, but they already have my information said the subconcious. Quick, think, AH! I could check online at the official bank's website.
After several unsuccessful attempts at finding my account in their records, I scroll down on the search engine page and-and-, there it is (Resurgent Capital Services a Scam!).
So here I am lost, not knowing where to go from here. What should I do now, who should I contact to get out of this pickle? Someone help, please, please respond to this report. I don't know what to do.
Oh, I almost forgot the balance on the old account was already at $19,000 with the interest around the year 2002. Also, I didn't sign anything. The application was done over the phone.
