Claim refused after rear end collision by driver using friend's car

On May 24, I was involved in an accident in which I was rear-ended. The car I was driving was not legally mine, as I am in the process of buying the vehicle from a friend and a trip to DMV has not yet been possible. At any rate the gemtlman who hit me was driving a friends car. The vehicle is insured with Geico.
HOWEVER, she is saying that she did not give permission for the person to driver her car and therefore Geico is refusing to pay for medical bills and car repairs. I have been without a car for a week today and the adjuster refuses to speak to me, because the vehicle is not mine. I thought car insurance followed a car, and the owner. What kind of stunt are they trying to pull???
