Wages garnished after missed payment plan, no court notice

I was threatened with a lawsuit from asset to collect on a old debt they said they purchased from providian. Like a lot of people, I was scared and agreed to make payments. I sent them 300 dollars down and agreed to make 125 a month payments. I got laid off from my job after making about 5 payments, I called them and asked them to give me a little time to make my next payment, they said i had 3 days, I couldn't make it and they garnished my wages.

I had no notice of a court date.
No chance to defend my actions, is this legal? Now that I am back to work, my wages are garnished and i can't make ends meet any more. Is there anything i can do? Also I noticed that as well as the garnishment being on my credit report, they also are showing up as a creditor for the providian loan that they are collecting for so this bad debt is on my credit report twice with different dates, is this legal? Can anybody help me?
