Cambece I was willing to work with you but no more

Several months ago, my husband was contacted by Cambece regarding a debt he had. We had been making payments to the company where he had the original debt and Cambece notified us that they had the account now and to start making the payments to them. I spoke with them and asked if there was a minimum payment that needed to be made every month since we hadn't received an actual bill from them. They stated to me then that the payments that I had been making were just fine as long as I kept a steady payment schedule going there should be no problems. I was making regular payments ranging from $150-$250 a month for quite sometime when we receive another notice from them stating that since we have decided to ignore this matter they would do what they need to do to recover the debt.

Well, that didn't sit well with me since I personally was the one making regular monthly payments to them. I called immediately and spoke with someone regarding this letter. When asked why they would say that I was ignoring this, he couldn't answer me. I then said that the last person I spoke with said the monthly payments I was making was fine just to continue, he stated, and not very politely, that they don't accept monthly payments, this has to be paid in full. He then offered a settlement of $1400 to clear this up. I then asked to speak with his supervisor who was also very rude. She went offered me a settlement also of $2000 paid in full. I laughed at this and said that the last person stated $1400 and now she is saying $600 more?

This supervisor kept pressuring me to contact family and friends and borrow this money to pay off the debt. I refused, of course. I told her that she will receive monthly payments like I had been doing and if they don't accept then that is fine with me.

This person went on to say that the monthly payments were going towards the principal balance, which to my understanding, the original principal balance was just over $2000. According to her, this account now gains $1000 a month INTEREST!!! I was told then that this account has an outstanding balance of $2700 yet she also told me that I have already paid $2500 towards this account.

This is a never ending cycle and I am tired of the ride. No more for these people, they are not out to "help" anyone, they can't keep an offer from one person to the next and they lack customer service skills. How can this be legal? Original balance of $2500 (ballpark figure) and according to them I have already paid that much but there is still a balance of $2700?
