My mother has been trying to settle my dead brother's affairs for four months. It was a little difficult as my brother was only 38 and didn't have a Will, which was explained to Geico. The only thing left was to sort out my brother's car Insurance. After talking to Geico representatives' my mother sent a Death Certificate, a copy of my brother's birth certificate and a copy of the car insurance to the person closing the policy.

My mother waited a month and a half and heard nothing. She called them and they said that a check for 99$ would be on the way soon. The check showed up but written to my brother's estate. My mother brought the check to the bank but as there was not a will and no executor she legally could not cash the check.

My mother called Geico asking what she should do at this point and was told that Geico could do nothing for her.

I got the number for Geico's CEO office (1-301-986-3000) and talked to Brian. I explained the situation to Brian he asked me to confirm some details for the account and he told me that he could not write the check to my mother only to the Insured.

I asked Brian if he was aware that his Insured was dead, as I just explained, he said that he was aware. I then asked him how a dead person was supposed to cash a check, his answer was "I can't imagine how". After explaining to him that the situation was not making progress he told me that the check could not be rewritten because of "Privacy issues" and that my mother would need to get Legal help for this issue.

Getting Legal help for 150$ isn't an answer for a 99$ check. I find it likely that this is done a lot by Geico to keep the money and collect the interest.
