Completely fraudulent collections account! Ripoff

I recently pulled my credit reports/scores as I am in an effort to clean up my credit a little bit. I'm the first person to admit that I made a couple of blemishes on my credit report between the ages of 19-21, and I am now trying to do the right thing and clean them up. Well, the report I pulled about 6 months ago appeared completely accurate. However, the one I bring up today has scores that are all at least 50 points lower. What is the only thing that is different about the report? A collections acount from Palisades (for a cell phone account I had several years ago with AT&T that was NEVER on my report before)—for $2000!!! I about lost it/passed out. I then start reading about Palisades and come to find out that since the merge of Cingulair and AT&T, there was a big sell-off of accounts that were previously not in collections.

I closed my account with AT&T. I do NOT owe them $2000!!! I was so dissatisfied that I PAID around $400 to CANCEL my account! I don't know how this can be legal. Trust me, I will be doing investigation and will update this report once I have more information about what is obviously a criminal operation disguised as a valid company.
