Ripoff Division Fraudulent Collection Practices - Illegitimate Debts

I was recently contacted by mail regarding an alleged debt I owed to Viatel from 1998. I called the number to attempt to resolve the matter and I was greeted by an extremely rude agent who interrupted me every time I began to speak. When asked to supply a bill for proof, he spoke in circles and concluded that I owe this debt. After getting nowhere with him and getting hung up on, I called back to speak with another individual who agreed that they would send a bill for proof. I never received the bill, but instead received the same notice I received the first time. Out of fear of having by credit affected adversely, I agreed to pay the 50% of the debt ($56) and get them off my back. They said they would put in a credit deletion with the credit agencies. I have very good credit and as of 10/05, there was nothing of this nature reported on my credit. I would like to hear from individuals or organizations who may be interested in initiating a class action law suit against this company for criminal business practices and to obtain a reasonable monetary settlement.
