Ripoff on bill already paid - Travis Smith and Bob Sanger unprofessional

My employer received a letter from NCO Financial referring to an unpaid natural gas bill from 2001 in the amount of roughly $3,000. My boss gave it to me to follow up on. When I called the phone # to inquire, I spoke to someone named Travis Smith who sounded like a teenager, who faxed me some (intentionally) blurry and misleading information. I was able to cross-reference the info and discovered the bill had been paid in and fortunately we had check and statement copies to back this up.

I called the number back and got Travis Smith again, who refused to acknowledge that I had proof of payment (he insisted that this was not paid, although I was looking at the copy of the cancelled check at the time). I asked to speak to his supervisor, a jerk named Bob Sanger who also refused to acknowledge proof of payment and demanded to speak to my boss. I forwarded the call. Later that afternoon, I called Bob Sanger to tell him I had just faxed him copies of the check, and his response was "I'll look it over" and quickly hung up on me. I have not heard back since, and this took place nearly two years ago.

My advice would be to stand up to these rodents at every opportunity, since they quickly back down when you do so.
