Ripoff bill for account i never had in a state ive never been in

I got a letter from this company today saying that "verizon select services inc" has turned my account over for collection. It says that i owe 1409.89. I called the company and asked them about the bill. The man i talked to told me that the bill is under J. (last name) and that it is for a home phone service bill from 2000. I told the man that i never had my phone service through verizon. He said that in 2000 it was GTE and verizon bought them out sometime after 2000. I told him i never had phone service through then either.

The man said the service was for the house at 121 listy lane. I told him we never lived at that address. When i asked him what i should do about this, he told me that someone might have gotten ahold of my social security number and used it. He also told me that the only way to take care of it is to write a dispute letter and include TAX forms showing where i lived in 2000. I asked him to give me the whole address again where this service was for, he told me the address, then told me it was in TEXAS. Im in ohio, ive never even visited texas.

The problem im having is that this letter has no specific information saying its me. My home address isnt even written correctly, it doesnt have a first name, and doesnt have a social security number or other specific identifying information. I looked at my tax forms and on none of them or the w-2's does it have residency information. It shows that i was in ohio at some point in but not for how long. The man i talked to didnt tell me any other options they would accept for proof of residency, and he never verified that i was the person on the bill.

Im calling the place back tomorrow and asking for a manager, im going to ask for what name the account is under and what ss#. Im giving it the benefit of the doubt, but after looking up the company on line and seeing several complaints for this same kind of problem, im wondering if im getting scammed.
