When I was in college, I quit paying a credit card bill to citicorp, w / a balance of 1980.00. About 2 years later I contacted citicorp and asked how I could make payment arrangements. They said it had been sold to a collection agency and to wait to hear from them. I did. I waited 9 years. Even though I had the same phone and lived in the same town, it took unifund 9 years. They never wrote me a letter. They just served me with a summons as they were suing me for over 7,000 dollars. I couldn't believe, after 11 years, this was being persued.

I hired a lawyer and agreed to pay the orig. Amount at 1980.00 with 1000 dollars down and payments monthly with interest beginning the month my first payment was due as well as 15% attorney fees.in the end, I way overpaid them. It ammortizated out to about 13 months at 132 per month. I paid them nearly 3 years. My attorney sent them a letter telling them we were done and I'd overpaid. Guess what!

A year later, they are suing me again, plus interest and more attorney's fees. Even though I have a promissory note that they had me sign, stating that we agreed to the original amount of 1980.00, they are now saying that I should have paid the amount they first said I owed of over 7,000.00 This is a fourteen year old acount. I have paid 5000.00 dollars to them and more in my attorney fees. Now, they say I oew more than 2,000 dollars. Armed w / my promissory note and my attorney I am most assured to win. The agreement was very clear and I had another attorney look at it and say that I had overpayed. But sadly, I have to pay the attorney to go back to court - Not to mention an awful lot of stress - All for a mistake that I made shortly out of childhood, and after waiting 9 years for them to "get back to me"
