Late Payment Letter for Mastercard Account I Did Not Recognize

I received a letter saying I was being reported to the credit bureau for a late payment, missed payment, or default on a Mastercard account I did not recognize. I was in a panic, thinking someone had opened an account in my name.

I spent an hour calling the Citibank numbers listed on a Friday evening, only to be told that they were all closed.

I finally got hold of their "Internet Fraud Bureau" and was told not to worry, that a computer error had sent out those letters in error to people who may have had a Citibank account in the past that was now closed. He said an apology letter would follow. I feel this information should have been posted on the Citibank website.

I also find it hard to believe that you cannot report a lost or stolen credit card on the weekends. Not a very comforting thought.
