Ripoff Confused

Hello
I received a letter from NCO saying I owe $1800. I have no idea why I owe this much! An representative from NCO told me to call PayPal, so I did but I waited 20 minutes for a representative from PayPal but never got one, so I hung up. I call NCO back and asked them to send me some documentation about this debt. They said its on the way and that I should call back in a month.

But in the letter it says if I don't make contact in the month that they assume the debt is real and needs to be paid. I have no idea what to do. Should I pay the debt even though I have no idea what it is for? Thanks
