We just returned from 2 weeks at this "all inclusive" h*lhole. It was not cheap and we are well-travelled enough not expect too much from 3rd world countries. We are also quite aware that Cancun went through a major hurricane, only a few months ago and some things may not be "up to par". This, however, was beyond the pale & are not things that should/would be effected by the hurricane. I will try to summarize:
1) drinks were so "watered down" you couldn't get a "buzz" if you drank from 10am to 1am. (and I'm not much of a drinker)
2) beer was warm - food was cold
3) Although food did not taste bad or make us sick, it was so bland as to be indistinguishable (i.E. Could not tell pork from beef)
4) On 8 occasions, in a 14 day stay, we could get no hot water for a shower.
5) Got "scammed" by the Conquest Vacations Rep, over a day tour and a car rental
6) Reservations for their "Speciality" restaurants were only available same day, from 8am to 11am and there was a line up every morning. It took us 4 days to get a reservation
7) Found out by accident, that our room key also opened somebody else's room on our floor. Real secure, huh?
8) Room smelled musty & damp, probably due to recent hurricane, but if we could bring a couple of air fresheners, why couldn't they put them in themselves?
9) Bathroom was so tiny that door bumped into toilet when opened.
10) "Oceanview" room looked over a marina, with communications wires as one's view. Oh yes, we also got to hear the folks coming and going on the "booze cruises", every morning from 8am or so, returning at 4 or 5pm. Very restful...
11) Can't walk on the beach at night. Too dark and stony (I think shore was pretty messed up by hurricane) Also can't go for a stroll along the street. There are 1 or 2 stores, which you have to cross 6 lanes of traffic to get to. (traffic going 80mph)
12) No pop, snack or ice machines. Ice has to be gotten from one of the bars and the last one closes at 1am.
13) 24 hour food service. What a joke! They put out a buffet of leftovers from 12am to 6am. The stuff isn't really hot and it all looks & smells like (pardon my French) cat barf.
In Blue Bay's favour, the bartenders, wait staff and best of all, the housekeeping staff, were all friendly, attentive and as helpful as they could be (naturally, language was a bit of a problem, but that's to be expected) The pools & grounds were lovely and if you like topless sunbathing, it's the place to be, but overall, the stress from this "non-vacation" left me needing a VACATION.
