Camco
Ripoff Ceases and Desists

After getting a letter and a couple of harassing calls from Camco, complete with profanity, abuse and threats to contact my employer and current creditors, I sent a cease and desist letter, cc'ed to the New York Attorney General, the Illinois Attorney General, Transunion, and the FTC.

I recently received a copy of Camco's response to the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs:

In response to the complaint filed by on Capital Acquisitions & Management Co. (here-in referred to as CAMCO) account number and.

Camco is in receipt of Mr.'s cease and desist notice on 7/30/04; therefore CAMCO has closed and ceased all collection activity on the above referenced account. Mr. Will not receive any more communication from Camco regarding this account. The account referenced in the complaint filed with your office originated with and was purchased from Foursquare Resource Capital.in addition, CAMCO does not report to any credit reporting agency.

While I'm pleased that CAMCO is leaving me alone, I'm not entirely satisfied with this response. From where I stand it looks like CAMCO is free to threaten and bully others, and if called on the carpet will respond "Gee, we won't bother this person again" while continuing to bother others who are not savvy enough to complain and harass them for money they do not owe.

I also note that CAMCO does NOT report to ANY collection agency, so if they threaten you with that you can laugh in their faces. (You may also want to record those threats, since that is a MAJOR violation of the FDCPA and can result in their paying you some cash for your trouble).
