Excessive parts cost

On May 16, I contacted Tap and Sons Electric, Inc, PO Box 804, Gilbert, AZ 85299 to see if they could help with an electrical problem I had. I explained what was wrong and advised themthat I thought it was the main circuitbreaker that had broken when I tried to reset it after a vacation I was on. They sent a technician out rather promptly and he indeed concluded that themain circuit breaker was broken. He replaced the circuit breaker: a Murray MPD2200 200 amp circuit breaker. Hecompleted this repair quickly. He advised me that the part cost was $525.00. Iinquired that the cost seemed high and he responded that he thought it wasbecause it was an older model (my house was built in 1985 as was thousands ofothers and this was the original breaker). He had the part readily availableon his truck. I am not the professionaland I conceded to the repair. Later, I learn that the retail cost for thispart runs $85.00 to $100.00, yet Tap and Sons Electric charged about 5 timesthat much: a 500% plus markup. There was an additional cost of $125.00 toinstall the part. I invite anyone tocheck the full retail price of this part. If this would have been a larger job, the excessive parts costs could have been hundreds or thousands of dollars more. I am 62 years old and realize that Ishould probably know better, but I placed my trust and faith in Tap and Sonselectric and now realize I made a costly and dramatic mistake.
