US Reader Service
Elder fraud

US Reader Service contacted my mother by phone and talked her into a 3 year subscription to 2 magazines totalling $249.99.

My mother is 88 years old and has dementia. There is no way she knew what she was doing, which would have been obvious to whoever was talking to her on the phone. They got her debit card information from her.

When the confirmation of this order came in the mail I called immediately and cancelled it. Another clue that it was fraudulent was that it came in my father's name and he has been deceased for 6 years!

They still put the charge through on her debit card. My brother has POA and he disputed the charge. The bank reversed the charge, we had my mother sign a form for the credit card company saying the charge was fraudulent, and we cancelled the card.

I just talked to US Reader Service and they are saying that the bank ruled in their favor and they have been paid for this subscription! They tried to put another order through and failed, but they say they will still "honor" this 3 year subscription and will send her the magazines! I told them good luck with that since the address they have is no longer valid and hung up.

How can they stay in business with this kind of practice? Why is a business that preys on vulnerable elderly people allowed to still be operating?
