Deception disguised by charm

I, too, had a young man come into my work place "peddling" his story about wanting to win a trip by getting the most magazine subscriptions. As with most work places, we don't allow solicitors. I also usually just tell them I'm not interested and send them on their way. This fellow was quite the character - and I figured the type of magazine I'd want wouldn't be even listed. Turns out I was wrong, so I decided to go ahead and help him out with winning his trip.

This young man sounds like one I read about in another report. He made some comment I must not be a native (Floridian). I said I had moved here from Colorado - he mentioned he was from California. He said he found the native Floridians rude (which I found surprising, as that's not true).

Well I ended up subscribing to a knitting magazine - thought the cost was a bit high, but it was for 2 years and knitting magazines tend to be a little higher. I also figured I was helping a good cause. The cost was $47 - I generally don't have cash on hand and asked to write a check. He said he would need at least $10 in cash - something about "good faith", but could do the remaining by check. I had that amount in cash and completed the transaction. There was some confusion on his part when I questioned the quantity he put down for number of issues I would be receiving. He didn't sound sure, but I figured the magazine company would get it right when they got the payment.

I really didn't think much about it for a while, as I know with any new subscriptions it takes a while to get the first issue. Then about a month ago I came across my copy of the receipt and figured I should have received my first copy by now, as the receipt was dated in November. I didn't realize that the "company" was out of Pensacola - just down the road from me. I called the phone number listed on the receipt only to get a recording that the number had been changed, the new number is not known.

That's when I decided to do a search on line to see if I could find another phone number. My search turned up finding that my suspicions were correct - this company is a scam.
