I paid 500 dollars for my certificates and when I tried going to an employment agency they said my certificates are not valid

I found this company on craigslist, they asked me to come in as if I was going to get interviewed. When I arrived, they made me fill out some paperwork and then brought me into a room where a lady told me I would have to pay a total of 438.00 for my 8hr, 16 hr, and fire gaurd certificate. I paid in credit and over the course of a week finished my courses. When it came time for enployement they sent me to two places and I never got the job because they wanted a license. After that I never went back because they told me I would get hired anywhere without a license. I finally got my license and called a company for placement, the company said my certificates aren't valid because that company is under investigation for providing false certificates. So I basically spent 1000 dollars in total and haven't gotten a job.
