Received a check in the mail for payment to pose as mystery shopper

I received a letter from a company called Liberty Marketing & Management out of New York. It also included a check for $1993. It said I had been chosen to become a mystery shopper and all I had to do was call a number indicated in the letter and I could cash the check.

There were very few details so I called the number and a male with a very strong accent answered. I told him I was responding to the letter and he asked for a reference number which had been placed on the letter. I gave him the reference number and began to ask questions about this "assignment."

I was told to cash the check and then call back. He wouldn't answer any of my questions. This sounded suspicious so I tried to research their name/number on the internet with no luck. I also checked the BBB with no luck there either. I then called the bank listed on the check and gave them the account number to find out if it was valid and was advised that the check is no good and it is part of a national scam.

If you receive one of these checks/letters in the mail, DO NOT CASH IT. It's a waste of your time and possibly a separation from your money.
