Charged my credit card for services that were not requested Internet

I contacted Intelius Feb. 2009 to locate a missing person. They rendered appropriate service and billed be as agreed, which was paid by credit card. However, they also signed me up for "Internet I.D. Protection Monitoring Service" which I never wanted or agreed to. Unfortunately, because the amount was only $19.95/mo. The charge was not detected until July. I called the number on my credit card statement, and after waiting for 5 minutes, was informed that there were no live persons to deal with my request, and that I had to contact them online if I wanted to cancel the account. I went online and was asked to enter my password, which I didn't have since I had never opened the account, so I indicated that I had forgotten my password. They responded with a number, "changing" my password.

I then went back online, but could not go past the first screen because it required that I enter my "old" password, which of course, did not exist, in addition to the changed password they provided. Catch-22.

Since I could not contact them by phone or online, I had no choice but to cancel my credit card and get a new one issued. This particular scam cost me just under $100. How many others have been scammed like me? How long will the authorities allow this to continue?
